How can Video Games make a person better?

July 19th, 2010 | by games |
Absinthe asked:

I have to do a project for school, basically I have to write about stuff that I believe in. The topic I have chosen is obviously the question. I’m tired of people blaming video games everytime some teenager shoots some people at a school. It’s not the video games fault, some people are just insane and gamers like myself shouldn’t be placed under the knife for it.

So i’m writing my essay on the other side of the argument, how video games can be beneficial to our society and make people healthier, more adapt individuals

I’ve already got a lot of the essay done but I would like to hear the advice of some others. Feel free to chip in

Thanks in advance

I wrote an article on it once. Maybe you can get some ideas from it: (see link below). Keep in mind that I think violence from video games does cause negative thinking (and I myself am a video-game designer), but I also think it depends on various factors that are easily neutralized by good parenting and good personal mindset. I think the way I do because violent in games used to affect me.

As for some things games can improve:
    1) All sorts of reflex skills
    2) All sorts of problem-solving skills
    3) Strategy skills
    4) Driving skills (processing complex moving images with your eyes and filtering out distractions – there was an article on this once)

Unfortunately, all these improvements are academic mental things. Actual changes you’ll see from day to day, especially regarding effects on personality, are usually only negative, depending on the games you play.

while it doesn’t affect everyone, i read in a magazine that surgeons who play video games increase their accuracy at doing surgery by about 20%

There is a Question on the bottom of the questions page (it has two stars) “how do you feel about video games” you might want to read some of those answers. Good Luck!!

I heard a report on the radio once, The long known thing that video games can be bad for sight, its really otherwise, it can be beneficial, and also video games can improve teamwork and camaraderie and also sportsmanship. It can improve one’s resourcefulness and his reflexes. It can improve one’s tactical thinking and analytical and logical mindfulness. This also improves one’s survival ability and his perseverance. Also when one shoots a person, its not due to video games, because video games act as the thing where the player releases his full violence, where he can’t in the reality, maybe its because the person has a Jacob’s syndrome, and also w/ millions of gamers around the world, why is there less than 5 killings related to games every month (I think)

I’m sure you’ve got more than enough from everyone about hand-eye coordination, cognition, memory and so on. I might suggest that what’s important is the notion of the fantasy world. Fantasy allows a person to temporarily disconnect with reality and allows them a time out to refocus – man cannot bear too much reality. By allowing an easier world, one where the rules are a bit simpler but still providing a sense of purpose and progression, the real world can feel easier to deal with.

Fantasy is like alcohol, too much is bad for you, but a little can make the world a better place.

People say that video games turn youngsters into violent people. That is not true because most games that are mature kids should not be able to buy. Video games help kids get away from their daily lives for a hour or two. Studies show that it helps with hand eye coordination which is helpful if your an athlete. Also it can help your memory if you have to figure out a difficult puzzle in a game. Video games are very helpful and those who dislike it are those who have never played video games that much.

I agree with you 100%. Video games are not bad at all. Video games are very good. They help hand eye coordination. It’s all thanks to video games that I have freinds because there are a lot of gamers in the world so I can actually have someone to talk to. And the wii is a unique game console that you can actually get exercise while playing it.

To some extent, video games can be very beneficial. Helps with hand / eye co-ordination in kids and many games have educational properties to help them learn. It would be up to the parent to control game play.

Also, I don’t mind my teenager spending his weekend playing video games with his friends in our basement. I know EXACTLY where they are and what they are doing.

Videogames improve strategical thinking. A recent study also shows that they improve eyesight, as the fast motion in them makes you used to seeing moving things. And they are not the reason for violence. War, teen violence, crime, and millions of other things were around long before them. Bigoted adults just don’t want to admit that it’s their fault the world is chaotic.
