Why are video games and other media released in Japan earlier than in other continents?

T.L. asked: It seems as if media (video games, music, etc) is always released in Japan before any other country. Also, extras (such as bonus tracks) to certain media is usually available only in Japan as well. Does anyone know the reason for this?videogames videos
