Victor Epand asked:

There are several video gaming systems available on the market today and to go with these fabulous video gaming systems there are some really exciting video games. In fact, there are video game that are being released for each video gaming system and some that are being specially make for a particular video gaming system.

Some of the most favorite of all the sports video games that are available on the market today are the Football Manager 2007, NCAA 2007, and lets not forget Madden 2007. These are some of the most sought after games each year when ever a new version is released. With the Football Manager 20007, the gamer has the ability the establish their very own team so that they can receive players on loan from much larger teams. The gamer is also given little helpful tips while playing to help improve their performance. This is helpful when selecting, playing, and coaching team players. This is definitely the game to choose for the gamer that craves that interactive experience as well.

Another great game on the market today is called Star Trek, and in this video game the gamer is gets placed as the head admiral of the elite task force of warships. As the head admiral the gamer has to control the fleet in large scale battles, which will test the strategic and tactical skills of the gamer. All combat includes authentic spaceships with full visual damage effects all in real time. The story is based upon the Star Trek Universe from the original series of the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the Enterprise. This video is only available for the Xbox-360 at the moment, but the battlefields are all given in three dimensional that are brilliantly depicted with the nebulas, wormholes, planets, and stars.

One of the top action games available on the market today is Grand Theft Auto I, II, III, IV, and now V. These video games are loved by children and adults alike and with the addition of each new version there is a brand new respect given to this video game and the graphics. The main character is Niko Bellic and he has recently moved to Liberty City to find himself immersed within a world of crime. This video game allows the gamer to work on their strategic skills and improve their techniques can be more innovative than ever before. The details of Liberty City are much more defined right down to each pot hole cover, window curtain, and even the vents on the roof tops.

Another action video game that has caught the attention of older gamers is the fifth installment of the Resident Evil. This video game is exactly like the movie, but I do not recommend it for young children due to the blood and gore. This is a video game that is thrilling and exciting to play that has many terrifying parts within the twists and turns so that the gamer is unable to tell exactly what will happen next. These video games are only a few of the wonderful video games available on the market that are sure to please any gamer.

Andy West asked:

Beginning in 1979, video games slowly started to invade homes and occupy young children and adults alike. The first video game was created in Japan and it has evolved greatly over the years. Video games have not only become a hobby for young children, but they have become an obsession for young adults. Individuals are constantly in competition with one another to have the latest and greatest video game. They also race one another to conquer all the levels of the most challenging games. With individuals constantly looking for new challenges, the area of video game design has increased in popularity.

Children are becoming fascinated with video games at a younger age. To prevent them from becoming zombies in front of the television, video game design companies are incorporation education, as well as physical activity to most of their video games. Games such as V-tech and Leap Frog use colors, numbers and words to educate young children on how to read and count. One recent game that has revolutionized the video game industry is Nintendo’s Wii. This game console uses video games to incorporate physical activity. Game users are required to use their physical skills to complete tasks such as fishing, bowling and tennis. While these games aim to educate and increase physical activity among youth, there are still traditional games on the market that simply aim to entertain.

What once started as a recreational activity, video gaming has now become a sport to some people. There are actually tournaments around the world where individuals compete against one another in the latest video games. Individuals also create teams to compete against individuals from all different countries. While most people think individuals play these games for fun, it is actually a very competitive sport. Individuals train for months, even years to master the skills need to conquer a game. They study each video game design and try to learn all the tricks and special features of each game. Individuals are not competing for bragging rights. Some tournaments offer prizes in excess of $500,000, proving that these games are not to be taken lightly.

With the increased popularity of video game tournaments and leisure activities, the career field of video game design is in high demand of qualified candidates. Colleges all over the country offer programs to teach students about video games and how to design them. Courses include work in graphic design, script writing and drawing. Classes are also offered in a variety of different specialties aimed to make individuals marketable in a variety of different fields. Students learn essential computer skills such as Photoshop, animation and cinematography. However, these computer skills are also important skills in different career fields, therefore opening numerous opportunities to graduates in this specific program

Upon completion of a video game design program, students can work for numerous different companies. Design companies are constantly looking for fresh thinkers and creative individuals to take their video games to new levels. Students in design programs learn how to conceptualize, design and plan animations and video games. They also learn how to produce and evolve character models and design levels in video games. Along with these important video game skills, students also learn marketing, business and entertainment law to make them a well-rounded candidate.

With a video game design degree, students can not only use their imaginations to create games, but they can also manage the production of games or be a critic with the skills they learn through this particular program. What was once thought of as simply entertainment has become an increasing popular industry.

Ida Byrd-Hill asked:

Four of every ten young-adult dropouts receive some government assistance. Dropouts are eight times more likely to be in jail, and half of all prison inmates are dropouts. (Milliken, 2008) Dropouts begin the dropping out process as early as fourth grade when it becomes quite apparent they cannot read well enough to keep pace with the curriculum. Or worse yet, when they can no longer handle the shame and embarrassment of special education.

These consequences translate into lost tax revenues and higher costs. We can only be economically vibrant when our residents are engaged in productive careers in this competitive global economy. Global competition begins with strong literacy skills.

Since the 1940s k-12 schools taught the whole language concept of reading- memorizing words, known as sight-reading. When we were a manufacturing society, sight-reading and memorization was the easy quick way to prepare people for the factory as basic reading skills were necessary. Unfortunately, whole language has virtually left generations of students functionally illiterate to struggle with reading every day in this highly complex world.

The saddest tragedy is that these students are naturally tech savvy and prefer self challenge skills that are necessary for today’s global society. Skills America needs to secure high demand businesses,” states Ida Byrd-Hill President of Uplift, Inc.

According to Claire Raines, author of Connecting Generations: The Sourcebook, Millennials, those ages 13 to 23 years of age, prefer to learn using teamwork, technology, structure, entertainment and experiential activities. These students are considered technical natives having been raised with cell phones, DVDs, and video game consoles since their birth. They are naturally technical savvy and prefer self challenge.

Millennials can be found manipulating video games – every day of the week for hours developing a skill of self challenge. This population loves the excitement and thrill of video games. Major game retailers, such as EB Games and Gamestop, have followed these Millennials, even to locations within the inner city.

Their curiosity, intensity and seriousness about their video games is refreshing. They have even joined informal clubs to compete. They read complicated gaming magazines to decipher how to move to the top level within any game.

According to Information Week 7/18/2008, “So far this year, retailers have sold $16.6 billion in video games, consoles, and related products, compared with $12.2 billion during the same period a year ago.” Video gaming is gaining momentum even in a shaky economy. Video gaming challenges a person’s brain especially since participants spend hours of time playing the game.

It appears many people believe this fact as sixty-five percent of American households play computer or video games. Eighty-five percent of all games sold in 2007 were rated “E” for Everyone, “T” for Teen, or “E10+” for Everyone 10+. Ninety-four percent of game players under the age of 18 report that their parents are present when they purchase or rent games. Sixty-three percent of parents believe games are a positive part of their children’s lives.

Imagine transporting the elements of video games to the reading arena. Gaming technology can revolutionize reading as it allows for fun repetitive review of concepts and vocabulary. Children could read and pass standardized test with ease. America could return to its dominance in education from its perch of 21 out of 25 industrialized nations where it slipped. Sounds like a pipe dream. Until one looks at STRONG READER.

Taisha Grant asked:

There are video games that can be played on multimedia consoles in the home, or on a home personal computer system. The formats of these video games may be rated for an entire family to view, or the video games may be labeled strictly for play by people over the age of 21. These Mature rated video games contain graphic violence, and may contain lewd language and graphic content.

Before a parent invests more than $30 on any given video games collection, they may choose to rent several video games for their child to play to see which ones are a true delight, and which video games will be ignored after just a short time. Some video games are offered in collector’s series in decorative tins, and are cherished by all children who view them as a status symbol.

Many children think that their popularity at school is based on the number of video games that are in their collection, and the number of multimedia entertainment consoles they have in their home. There are several handheld models that are viewed as very desirable for youngsters because of their portability and compact features.

Many of the video games for the handheld game consoles require daily interaction with pets, and failure to participate on a day-to-day basis might cause people to move out of town because nobody is interested in them. This form of game play teaches children to keep appointments and remind them that there are people in the world that do count on them on a day-to-day basis.

The imaginary friends that some video games feature can make up for friends and pals that a child does not have in their real life. Children learn to repair their own self-esteem by making contributions to the games that are truly unique for their character. A gift of a fish is a big thing in some hand held games, and the gift of a new dresser can brighten a young girl day better than blue sky and rays of sunshine could ever hope to accomplish.

The competitive spirit of children learning to adapt in the real world, can be safely contained within the small cubicles of visual space provided in many handheld game console models. Children can use video games to teach themselves how to play basketball, football, and learn what it takes to be a competitor in a World Series Playoff.

As a child progresses through many experience levels in video games, their characters are not the only ones that grow strong. Children learn to make quick decisions, and manipulate screen data to make shots that are typical of a seasoned football or basketball player at a college or university level school.

These athletic achievements might seem quite small and insignificant to an adult, and generally are. Until the parents take the time to try and maneuver through course after course, they do not actually realize how hard some of those movements are, and think that many of the moves are unattainable. Savvy game players will quickly add salt to the wound. Parents must sit back quietly while their children beat them soundly with very few moves required in the entire game process.

Carrie Lauth asked:

A review of Video Games & Your Kids – How Parents Stay in Control by Hilarie Cash, PhD and Kim McDaniel, MA

Like many parents, I’m concerned about my kids not spending too much time in front of a screen. Whether that screen is television, computer, or video games matters little. One reason for this is because I have seen how screen time interferes with other, more important activities. Activities like reading, spending time with family, helping around the house, even daydreaming.

It seems that boys in particular have a hard time accepting limits around video gaming and computer time. Since I have two sons, I didn’t want any part of the constant fighting over the video game system between themselves and refusing to accept boundaries and limits that I see in other families. I’ve also observed kids missing a lot of sleep and even social interaction with peers because of spending too much in an artificial world, with detrimental effects both short and long term.

Video Games and Your Kids gathers much of the current research, science and data about why parents should be concerned about their kids spending excessive time playing video (and computer) games. Rather than being the greatest invention since the baby wipe, video games aren’t always just harmless fun.

For one, video games are highly addictive. In fact they are designed to be so – marketers call it the “sticky factor”. The longer the child plays, the better in their estimation. Another reason they are addictive is because of the fast moving images on the screen and the way they stimulate the brain. This sounds like a benefit but it is not. It leads to the child having difficulty with other types of learning – the kind that comes from listening and discussing and solving problems that take more time.

Secondly, video games have negative effects on the body and the brain – not only do video games contribute to a sedentary lifestyle (possibly contributing to childhood obesity) but they also retrain the brain and the way it thinks. This has deleterious effects on how a child learns and their ability to learn outside the game.

Parents sometimes believe that video and computer games are “educational” but the evidence does not support that assessment. In fact, some studies point to the opposite effect and have shown a correlation between computer games and decreased vocabulary.

Video games can also lead to a reduced attention span and reduced ability to deal appropriately in social situations. Video games can also lead to eye and vision problems, headaches, sleeping difficulties, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Kids who spend a lot of time gaming even develop poor posture and shallow breathing.

Interestingly, the authors aren’t totally opposed to video games but remind parents that they must be very careful about their use. This book is helpful to a parent as it gives us research to back up those gut feelings we have. Allowing a child to have unrestricted access to video games is a bad thing. It also gives you some pointers from these experts on how to spot video game addiction and how to get help for your child – and even yourself or a spouse if you are the ones with a problem.
